Summer At The Forge

Having always had a keen interest in hands on making and craftsmanship, over the summer I decided to explore this first hand; working as an apprentice at my local forge.

"The picturesque Forest Green Forge is one of the few forges still working on a village green and in this case, nestling in the heart of the picturesque Surrey Hills. The historic building dates back to the 16th century and care has been taken to preserve its character and charm."- https://forestgreenforge.co.uk

My bachelor's dissertation will take direct inspiration from this experience and be developed into an essay that attempts to re-connect the idea of craftsmanship and the architect. Exploring two key definitions/views of the craftsman and craftsmanship; first from Richard Sennett's 'The Craftsman' and the second opinion is from David Pye's 'Workmanship of Risk'. Using these definitions plus history/origins and my own primary research I established an original definition of the craftsman and questioned the actions of the architect against it.
